Jackson State to offer free career training program through UpSkill Mid-South grant

Jun 6th, 2024

Jackson State Community College (JSCC) is set to offer workforce industry training beginning in June. All tuition and material costs will be sponsored by UpSkill Mid-South.

The consecutive three-phase training begins June 17 and will run through August 7 at JSCC’s Ned R. McWherter Center, providing 200 hours of industry certification training. As part of the training, students will also be eligible to roll training hours into 15 hours of college course credit towards JSCC’s Advanced Maintenance Technician (AMT) Co-Op. This award-winning co-op is embedded into the college’s Engineering System Technology Degree and is comprised of a consortium of 34 workforce industry partners.

“We want to bring an opportunity to the region that would allow people to gain the credentials necessary to excel in their careers,” said Dr. Tom Pigg, Executive Director of Workforce Solutions. “These trainings will provide students with key credentials that will allow them to take the next step in their career, earn a promotion, or pivot into the manufacturing industry if they so choose. The benefit of converting this training into college credit for an award-winning program is a bonus for those looking to start their careers.”

The three phases of training will include:

  • Phase One: Basic Digital Workforce Skills Training (60 Hours)
  • Phase Two: Intermediate Digital Workforce Skills Training (60 Hours)
  • Phase Three: Multi-Skilled Maintenance Skills Training (80 Hours)

Multiple certificates ranging from OSHA Safety to Robotics will be included as part of the three-phase program's completion.
