Lynum selected as Jackson State Community College Athletic Director

Jackson State Community College (JSCC) has selected Dr. Kevin Lynum to serve as its new athletic director after a nationwide search.

Dr. Lynum, a state champion winning athletic director and Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) National Coach of the Year finalist, has over a decade of high-level coaching experience. Throughout his career, he has served as the Head Women’s Basketball Coach at Florida A&M and Northwest Kansas Technical College (NW Tech) and as the Assistant Women’s Basketball Coach at Norfolk State University and Winthrop University. Dr. Lynum also served as the Athletic Director at Southeast High School for a Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) State Championship team.

Dr. Lynum's career has been marked by significant achievements. During his tenure at Norfolk State, his accomplishments included two Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Regular Season Championships, two MEAC Conference Tournament Championships, two NCAA March Madness Tournament Berths, and 53 wins over two seasons. Under his leadership, the team achieved their highest ranking in the college insider's Mid-Major Poll at #13.

Other accomplishments include leading his team at NW Tech to a historic 28-2 record and being named a finalist for the WBCA/Marine Corps Junior College National Coach of the Year Award. His team ranked in the top five nationally in several categories and he recruited and coached two WBCA All-Americans. Lynum is the all-time single season wins coach in Northwest Tech history.

In addition to his excellence in athletics, Dr. Lynum encouraged his players’ dedication to their academics. During his time coaching at Florida A&M, the women’s basketball team achieved the highest team GPA among all 16 intercollegiate athletics programs on campus and the highest term GPA in program history.

“As the Athletic Director at Jackson State, my philosophy centers on fostering a culture of excellence, integrity, and holistic development within our athletic programs,” said Dr. Lynum. “Drawing from my diverse background, including experience as a successful coach and leader, I am dedicated to guiding our student-athletes, coaches, and staff towards achieving their fullest potential both on and off the field.”

Dr. Lynum holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from American Military University, a Master of Business Administration from Warner University, a Master of Education from Florida A&M, and most recently obtained a Doctor of Education from Southwestern College in 2023.

In addition to his experience in athletics, Dr. Lynum also served in the U.S. Army from 2005 to 2013 as a Staff Sergeant, Journalist, Broadcast Supervisor, and in Special Operations.

Dr. Lynum began his role as JSCC Athletic Director on June 15. A press conference will be held on July 16 at 9 a.m. in the Ayers Auditorium of the Ned R. McWherter Center at the Jackson State Jackson Campus.
