Jackson State Community College’s Division of Workforce Solutions is offering the American Heart Association’s Basic Life Support for Health Providers course on November 21.

Jackson State Community College’s Division of Workforce Solutions is offering the American Heart Association’s Basic Life Support for Health Providers course on November 21.  Successful completion of the training will provide participants with a two-year AHA certification in BLS.

The total cost for the course is $65. The hands-on portion of the course will be held at the Jim and Janet Ayers Center for Health Sciences. Specific directions to the class will be sent to you a week before the class.

A one-hour session must be selected from one of the times listed below. If there is enough demand, additional times will be added. If all timeslots are full, please contact us at 731-425-8826 or workforce@jscc.edu .

Enrollment in each class session will be limited to six students. If your desired time slot has reached maximum capacity, you must select another time. Please note that we reserve the right to consolidate classes with fewer than four participants. If this situation occurs, you will be notified at least a week before the class. Online registration will be turned off on Wednesday, November 19. Please call 731-425-8826 regarding registration after this date.

Additional information about the course:

The course teaches Basic Life Support knowledge and skills online by utilizing various eLearning assets such as dramatizations, simulations, animations, self-directed learning, and interactive activities. A hands-on session with an AHA instructor is scheduled to demonstrate competency in the course material. After completing both the eLearning and hands-on session of the BLS Course, students will be able to:

  • Describe the importance of high-quality CPR and its impact on survival
  • Describe all of the steps of the Chain of Survival and apply the BLS concepts of the Chain of Survival
  • Recognize the signs of someone needing CPR
  • Perform high-quality CPR for adults, children, and infants
  • Describe the importance of early use of an AED and demonstrate its use
  • Provide effective ventilations by using a barrier device
  • Describe the importance of team dynamics in multi-rescuer resuscitation and perform as an effective team member during multi-rescuer CPR
  • Describe the technique for relief of foreign-body airway obstruction (choking) for adults and infants
