Veterans' Support

Jackson State Community College is dedicated to supporting veterans and their families through unique challenges. In collaboration with the Department of Veterans Affairs, we offer free counseling and support services, including weekly "Combat Support Groups" in Jackson. These confidential sessions cover topics like relationships, financial issues, and mental health, led by licensed military professionals. All area veterans and their families are welcome. Additional support is available 24/7 through the Veterans Crisis Line. For personalized assistance, visit the Veterans Affairs Office in the Administration Building, Room 124, or call (731) 425-2618 to schedule an appointment.

The Veterans' Affairs Coordinator assists students eligible to receive benefits through the

  • Post 9/11 G.I. Bill® (Chapter 33)
  • Dependents Educational Assistance (Chapter 35)
  • Selected Reserve Educational Assistance Program (Chapter 1606)
  • Vocational Rehabilitation  (Chapter 31)
  • GI Bill®-Active Duty Educational Assistance Program (Chapter 30)
  • Tuition Assistance and TN Strong Act - see your Educational Service Officer (ESO), or counselor within your military service before enrolling.

GI Bill® is a registered trademark of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). More information about education benefits offered by VA is available at the official U.S. government website.

Eligible recipients must apply to VA to receive approval for some benefits.  

  How to Apply for Military Benefits 

VA will mail a Certificate of Eligibility to the student as proof of benefits; a copy must be turned in to the VA Coordinator along  with a copy of a DD214 Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty.

Verification of Enrollment to VA

Students who are receiving benefits under the Montgomery GI Bill® Chapter 30, Chapter 1606, and 1607 must verify their enrollment to the VA each month. 

Students using Post-9/11 Bill® Chapter 33 must also verify enrollment. Learn how to verify enrollment for Chapter 33. 

Other Financial Assistance for School: 

In addition to available VA Benefits, you are strongly encouraged to pursue other sources of financial assistance, by filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), available on the JSCC Financial Aid website.

This site also features a link to estimate the total cost of your education at Jackson State, based on financial aid resources. It does NOT include the calculation of additional VA benefits you may receive.

Apply early for the Helping Heroes Grant

Deferred Payment Possibility (See the VA Coordinator for details)

Students receiving VA benefits may elect to apply for a deferment of tuition and fees prior to the start of the semester.

Eligibility for Deferment of Payment of Tuition and Fees:  Eligible Students Receiving U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs or Other Governmentally Funded Educational Assistance Benefits may apply for deferment. The deferment amount shall not exceed the total monetary educational benefits to be received for the term. Students who have been granted deferment are expected to make timely payments on their outstanding tuition and fees balance once education benefits are delivered. Eligibility for such deferment shall terminate if the student fails to abide by any applicable rule or regulation or act in good faith in making timely payments.

Prior Learning Assessment

The VA Coordinator will obtain an official copy of each service member's Joint Service Transcript or Community College of the Air Force Transcript to review for any prior learning credit.  Credit may be granted as general elective credit or specific course credit as approved by department deans.

Servicemember Opportunity Portal

Military service members and veterans can identify schools that best meet their needs through the Tennessee Higher Education Commission’s TN-Servicemember Opportunity Portal (TN_SOP). This site allows you to review all public colleges and universities in the state to identify what academic credit you can earn for your military experience.

Verification of Enrollment

Verification of Enrollment to VA for Students Receiving Chapter 30, Chapter 1606, and Chapter 1607 Benefits

Students using Chapter 30, Chapter 1606, and 1607 must verify their enrollment through the internet WAVE application or from a touch-tone phone. 

You must verify your enrollment on the last day of each month for which benefits are to be paid.  The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs will not issue payment until you verify.

If you have made any changes to your enrollment, you will need to notify the JSCC Veterans Affairs office.
