It is with our sincerest and deepest condolences to announce the passing of Dr. Mechel Camp, Dean of Humanities and Social Sciences and longtime English professor at Jackson State Community College.

Camp was a highly regarded colleague and educator, serving on various committees throughout the JSCC system in an effort to advance the college in every way. She was equally held in high regard by her students, some going as far to credit Camp for being the source of inspiration to further pursue English at the Bachelor and Masters levels because of the impact made through her coursework.

JSCC President Dr. George Pimentel released the following statement to the campus community following the news of Dr. Camp's passing:

"It is with a tremendously heavy heart I inform you of the unexpected passing of our dear friend and Dean, Dr. Mechel Camp.

Mechel was a much loved and valued member of our Jackson State family. Her dedication to our campus community and to her students was exceptional.

May we all take a moment to reflect on the positive spirit and friendship she brought to each of us as we all will feel the impact of her loss.

At this difficult time, I ask that you keep her family in your thoughts."

During her 22-year career with the college as an English professor, Camp has served in various capacities, including the Assistant Dean of Arts, Dean of Communication and Humanities, Dean of Liberal Arts, and most recently Dean of Humanities and Social Sciences.

Camp was a product of the University of Alabama system, earning her Doctorate and Bachelors in Tuscaloosa and her Masters at the Huntsville campus.

A memorial will be held on the Jackson campus in her honor in the future. A date for the memorial has not been set at this time.

JSCC is offering emotional support at this time through the Employee Assistance Program (EAP). EAP services are provided at no cost and all services are strictly confidential and can be accessed 24 hours a day, seven days a week, at 1-855-HERE4TN (1-855-437-3486).

Sara Youngerman will serve as the interim Dean of Humanities and Social Sciences during this time and can be reached at syoungerman@jscc.edu.
