Jackson State Community College (JSCC) Medical Coding Program has been awarded $500,000 in additional grant funding, increasing the total funding through the Health Resources & Services Administration’s (HRSA) Delta Region Rural Health Workforce Training Program to $1.7 million.

The grant, initially awarded in September of 2022, was recently approved for an increase of $500,000 over a four-year period that will end the fall semester of 2026. As part of the second wave of grant funding, the Medical Coding Program will now offer a second tier of training, focused on current healthcare professionals looking to upskill and earn industry credentials.

“This HRSA grant has already proven to be an exceptional asset for our students, enabling them to enter the healthcare industry while receiving high-quality training, said Chrystal Taylor, Program Director and Assistant Professor of Health Sciences. “This second tier of training will offer individuals that are currently working in the revenue cycle the ability to enhance their skills and acquire essential knowledge and certifications that will significantly improve their effectiveness in their roles.”

Tier two training, as part of the grant, will incorporate JSCC’s Workforce Solutions to provide training both virtually and in-person. Scholarships from the grant funding will cover tuition, program fees, books, certification exam fees, and a stipend for additional educational expenses over the four-year grant period.

“Healthcare facilities throughout West Tennessee will greatly benefit from this training, allowing their revenue cycle employees to enhance their skills and receive industry certifications,” said John McCommon, Director of Workforce Solutions at JSCC. “Our courses have been designed to sharpen employees’ skills to make them more accurate and efficient in their coding, resulting in optimized revenue cycle management and increased financial returns for employers. This is a wonderful opportunity for employers to upskill their employees at no cost to them.”
