JSCC Student Named Oberndorf Scholar

Jackson State Community College (JSCC) student Kaylee Nance has been named an Oberndorf Scholar by Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society and received a $1,500 scholarship.
The Oberndorf Lifeline to Completion Scholarship helps Phi Theta Kappa members overcome unanticipated financial barriers preventing the completion of their first college credential, associate degree, or certificate.
“I am incredibly grateful to be named an Oberndorf Scholar,” said Nance. “This scholarship has assisted me in paying for expenses outside of college so I can focus on my studies. Without this scholarship, I don’t believe I would have financially been able to take the next steps in my education to earn my associate degree.”
Nance is the chapter President of Phi Theta Kappa at Jackson State Community College and is deeply involved in her academics. She also serves as an editor for JSCC’s Spilled Ink Society annual literary journal.
“Kaylee is an outstanding student, and an equally inspiring leader,” said PTK Faculty Advisor Jason Keeton. “She has done a great job as our PTK president to help uplift and encourage other PTK members in their own academic journeys. I’m happy to see her named as an Oberndorf Scholar, and I’m excited to see where her education takes her.”
The scholarship is named for its benefactors, Rosemary and Lou Oberndorf. Lou co-founded METI, a world leader in medical education technology whose products are used in many community colleges as well as in the world’s leading medical schools. He is a member of the Phi Theta Kappa Foundation Board of Trustees.
Up to 15 Oberndorf Lifeline to Completion Scholarships are awarded annually to students across the United States.
“Without a doubt, the Oberndorf Scholarship has a tremendous impact on the lives of these hard-working, high-achieving students, making it possible for them to complete their associate degrees,” said Amanda Gorman, Interim Executive Director of the Phi Theta Kappa Foundation. “We are grateful to the Oberndorf family for their commitment to helping students achieve their educational goals. Congratulations to all of the scholarship recipients!”
