Nineteen students earn scholarships to study abroad this summer

JACKSON, TENN. – This summer, 19 Jackson State Community College (JSCC) students have earned scholarships to experience their studies in 10 foreign countries including Japan, Greece, Italy, Spain, Austria, France, Scotland, Ecuador, and beyond.
Jackson State is notorious for providing students with the ability to study abroad during the summer, a program traditionally seen as only available to four-year institutions. Each year, the college has grown its Global Learning program to now award $54,440 in scholarships, allowing students to experience this life-changing educational opportunity.
Students awarded scholarships for their study abroad program of choice will spend three weeks abroad, earning college credit for one course while getting to see their curriculum come to life in some of the birth countries of their studies.
“Many of our study abroad students have never left the state before they take a flight with Jackson State to a foreign land,” said Coordinator for Global Learning, Dr. Liz Mayo. “We are creating international ambassadors who study abroad and then return to their various West Tennessee communities to share those life-altering experiences.”
Each student’s scholarship requires them to return to JSCC as an International Ambassador to promote the study abroad program to their peers, share their personal travel journals, photos, and videos with the college.
To qualify for the scholarship and program, which is hosted through Jackson State’s partnership with the Tennessee Consortium for International Studies (TnCIS), students must be enrolled full-time or part-time, over the age of 18, completed at least 12 college-level hours, met minimum GPA guidelines, and were interviewed by the JSCC International Education Committee.
Students selected are examples of exemplary accomplishments, and their dedication to the program is evidenced by their long application, scholarship, and orientation process.
