Office of Advising

Your Success is Our Mission

Jackson State provides degree-seeking students a dedicated advisor to ensure each student's success. Advisors are equipped to connect students with support services, academic support and more. They also serve as a knowledge source for students looking to transfer to a four-year institution after graduation.

Have a question and don't know who to ask? Ask your advisor!

Read more below about the various ways our Office of Advising can help you achieve your educational and personal goals during your time at Jackson State.

How Does Advising At JSCC Work?

Degree-seeking students are assigned one of our Advising Coaches until they complete 30 credit hours* and become a sophomore. They then transition to a Faculty Advisor based on their program of study.

*All Health Sciences programs, Nursing, AST Teaching, and Criminal Justice assign faculty advisors to students once they complete their learning support instead of waiting until the 30-hour mark.

Students can see their assigned advisor in JWeb’s Student Portal or in their Degree Works page.

Types of Advisors

  • Advising Coaches work with freshmen students based on their educational goals.
  • Relational Advising Coach works both with their assigned students and with the college’s Peer Mentor program.
  • First Steps Advisors* are students recently graduated from high school who require learning support
  • Next Steps Advisors* focus on adult students returning to college to get their first degree.

*Both student populations under this advisor type are part of the TN Coaching Project, researching advising interventions for designated student populations.

Each of the above grant-based advisor types have specifically assigned caseloads of students for one academic year to complete the respective grant’s research.
