There are many types of financial assistance available to students depending on their eligibility. They are summarized below. Additional details can be found by following the link for each type.
Federal Grants – Federal grants are funds given to eligible students based upon the federal government’s determination of the student’s financial need. Unlike loans, the funds for which the student qualifies do not need to be repaid. Examples include the Federal Pell Grant and Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG).
Federal Work Study – The Federal Work-Study Program (FWS) is a federally funded program designed to encourage and promote part-time employment opportunities for students with demonstrated financial need. Wages are tax free. A list of positions can be found by following the link.
Veteran and Military Assistance – JSCC is dedicated to supporting veterans, service members, and their families, including with help navigating available VA or Department of War (DoW) financial assistance.
Tennessee Education Lottery Scholarship – The HOPE Scholarship is established and funded from the net proceeds of the state lottery and awarded to entering freshmen who are enrolled at an eligible postsecondary institution within sixteen (16) months after graduating from an eligible high school in Tennessee.
Tennessee Promise – Tennessee Promise is both a scholarship and mentoring program focused on increasing the number of students who attend college in our state.
Tennessee Reconnect – The TN Reconnect Grant is available to students who are classified as independent on the FAFSA OR at least 23 years of age by January 1 of the academic year of enrollment who have not previously earned an associate degree or more advanced degree and are enrolled at least part-time in an eligible program of study.
JSCC Scholarships – Scholarships are a form of financial aid that can be based on need, merit, or other factors. Scholarships do not need to be repaid, except in certain circumstances identified in the scholarship’s criteria.
Foundation Scholarships – JSCC Foundation Scholarships are funded through our college foundation to help more students access their first associate degree.
Other Scholarships – These could include outside/private scholarships you bring with you from employers, community groups, etc.
Private Loan Information — Private Loans are provided by private lenders and are based on income and credit. Individuals must submit applications directly to the lender. Individuals must repay the lenders for their loans. Before applying for a loan, JSCC recommends that students speak with the Financial Aid Office about their federal or state financial aid options. Note: JSCC does not participate in the Federal loan programs.
